Whatever it is you want, use your imagination, create games, and play. The mission of any school need not be limited to academic achievement in fact it should be to nurture the desire to learn in collaboration and cooperation with each other. If the mission focuses on the narrow goal of promoting individual achievement than it fosters the type of competing and comparing that often threaten acceptance, tolerance and synergy.

For thirteen years I supervised a disciple program in a middle school. The purpose of our program was to provide a quality environment and engage the student in a process of responsible decision-making. The hope was in this process the student would accept responsibility for their actions and choose a better positive way to solve a problem. The character component was critical.

It was successful in a limited way because it only engaged students with behavior problems. It was not proactive because it did not reach the greater number of students who helped shape and influence the environment of the school. Nor did it work to change the attitudes of the teaching staff. Despite devoted time and energy there was no paradigm shift in the way we looked at solving problems. What we needed was a critical examination of how each one of us hoped to embody the principles of character.

As a staff we were an older version of our middle school population. There was gossip, there were cliques, there was bullying, there was jealousy, there were petty grievances and wasted energy on small things. I have no doubt that students were aware of these adult relationships and viewed them as a template for their own behavior.

The best way to teach character is to show love and kindness. The environment that has a high regard for individual differences, for forgiveness and acceptance is one that allows everything to flourish. Think of it in terms of providing rich compost that needs little to protect it during times of stress. The environment itself is the protection.

This connected integrated view holds true for every system in the universe. Our own bodies operate so smoothly that we can forget about them until some failure captures our attention.

Schools can become the best place to be if the adults insist on nurturing an environment of love of kindness. It will be apparent to every child that character is not just a buzzword, or an inspirational message, it is a practice built on the right foundation.

Early Education Partnership to Expand Protective Factors for Children With Child Welfare Involvement

The Administration for Children and Families, more commonly referred to as ACF, is a federal government agency operating within the United States Department of Health and Human Services that's primarily responsible for pursuing and supporting programs that are intended for children, youth and families.

The grants and initiatives of the ACF are all specifically designed to achieve its main agency mission which is to "establish a strong commitment to working with vulnerable populations including people with developmental disabilities, refugees, and migrants, to address their needs, strengths, and abilities."

In accordance with this mission, the Administration for Children and Families has recently established the Early Education Partnerships to Expand Protective Factors for Children with Child Welfare Involvement Program.

The primary objective of the program is to solicit applications intending to conduct projects designed to improve the socio-emotional and behavioral well-being of infants, young children, and their families, through collaborative service delivery.

In addition, the program also aims to build infrastructure capacity between State, local, or tribal child welfare agencies and early childhood systems in an attempt to ascertain that children and infants who are at-risk of entering into foster care will constantly have the access to comprehensive, high-quality early care and education services.

Essentially, the initiatives of the program are focused on a range of children across the welfare spectrum which includes children who are at-risk of being reported to child welfare, have already been reported to child welfare, are currently within child welfare custody, reside in in-home care, out-of-home care, or children who are receiving post-adoption services.

Ultimately, the activities covered under this program can create and develop new models or replicate existing models of collaborative policies, procedures, and/or practices for identifying and addressing the early care and educational needs of its target population.

To support the activities of the Early Education Partnerships to Expand Protective Factors for Children with Child Welfare Involvement Program, the Administration for Children and Families is set to administer funds in the amount of $2,500,000.

The institutions and organizations who will be deemed eligible to submit an application under this program are the following:

a) State governments

b) County governments

c) City or township governments

d) Independent school districts

e) Public and State controlled institutions of higher education

f) Native American tribal governments (Federally recognized)

g) Native American tribal organizations (other than Federally recognized tribal governments)

h) Nonprofit organizations

i) Small businesses

j) For-profit organizations other than small businesses

Three Aspects of Character

The Character Education Partnership defines character as a three-part concept: understanding, caring about, and acting upon core ethical values. A useful mnemonic for the three parts is head, heart, and hand. In other words, in the CEP definition character includes a cognitive component, an affective component, and a behavioral component. Thus, to become a person of character, a student needs to develop all three aspects.

The cognitive aspect of character is best understood as having two sides: knowledge and reasoning. Students need to know what is right and wrong and be able to figure it out themselves. The latter is especially true when facing novel, ambiguous, or contradictory circumstances, because students cannot be taught the correct response to all possible moral situations. Instead, they often need to figure out responses to moral circumstances on their own.

Schools therefore need to teach knowledge relevant to ethical issues and to implement pedagogical practices that promote the development of relevant reasoning structures, such as moral reasoning, perspective taking, and interpersonal understanding. In other words, schools need to promote critical thinking about socio-moral phenomena.

The second aspect, the affective component of character, requires a different approach than the cognitive aspect of character development does. It entails emotions and motivation. It has to do with valuing goodness; with caring about right and wrong; and with committing to core values such as respect, responsibility, fairness, and caring. As suggested above, one cannot really separate the heart from the head. It is the fostering of empathy and related moral emotions that ignites the heart and, in order to foster such emotions, one needs the cognitive skills to recognize another's feelings and perspectives as well as to understand the related moral issues.

The third aspect, the behavioral element of character, has recently become a broader and richer concept. One way to conceptualize the hand of character is by thinking about a helping hand. This aspect of character is the doing aspect, and in character education, there are two forms of doing that become part of the curriculum - moral action and skills of social-emotional behavior.

By reflecting on experiences that involve moral action, students strengthen the cognitive and emotional aspects of character.  Studies have shown that students involved in a variety of opportunities for civic engagement while in high school are more likely to continue being civically engaged up to three decades later. As students develop, they can become increasingly involved in the creation of such opportunities, increasingly reflective about the experiences, and increasingly abstract in understanding the social and moral meaning of them.

The second form of hand, or doing, comes from learning and practicing behavioral skills that help the student act with good character. Teaching behavior skills not only helps students develop individual character, it also lays the foundation of primary prevention. Therefore, many schools have begun to focus on building students' social and emotional skills. These skills are driven by the theory and research that support what many developmental guidance curricula have been trying to do for a while, typically as mental health "carve-out" or stand-alone add-on curricula.

Regardless of which definition of character one adopts, character should clearly be understood to be (a) psychological, (b) multifaceted, and (c) developmental, Thus, the obvious conclusion would be that character education needs to focus on the multifaceted psychological development of students and therefore needs to rely on a range of diverse educational strategies.
